Unauthorized livestock trading occurring in Kamchatka's marketplaces
In the Kamchatka Krai region, an ongoing issue persists as poachers continue to illegally catch and sell Chum Salmon, a marine species known for its silvery appearance and weight ranging from six to 12 kg.
Despite the official salmon fishing season not beginning until June, chum salmon have already been spotted for sale in various marketplaces across Kamchatka. The organizer of these illegal operations remains undisclosed in publicly available information.
The price for each Chum Salmon ranges from 11,000 to 22,000 rubles, equating to approximately 1,800 rubles per kilogram. Some of the fish for sale are found to have roe, but its presence depends on the buyer's luck.
Recently, a correspondent from the "Kamchatka Life" publication came across an advertisement for the sale of Chum Salmon. The fish being sold were reportedly caught in the Ust-Kamchatsk area.
The illegal trade of Chum Salmon is not a new issue in Kamchatka. In previous years, the problem has persisted, with poachers offering the fish at lower prices, such as 1,500 rubles per kg in 2022, but the price for the illegal catch has increased in 2023, ranging from 1,200 to 1,300 rubles.
It's important to note that the sale of Chum Salmon is illegal, and the fine for illegally catching one Chum Salmon now exceeds 10,600 rubles. Local fishermen continue to engage in these activities, undeterred by the penalties.
